Morton Girls Rugby recently took second place at the Rugby Illinois D2 State Championships on June 2.
Morton Girls Rugby lost against the Chicago Rugby Club (CRC) with a final score of 27 to 7.
“Morton went into half trailing 10-0. After a couple of scores in the second half Morton trailed 15-7 which CRC ultimately pulled away with a 27-7 final. Against a strong team that went undefeated in the season, Morton is the only team in Illinois that was able to put up points against CRC. The team played a great match and really proved why they were 1 of the top 2 teams in Illinois,” said coach Mr. Luis Castanon.
This was junior Nadia Perez’s first year on the rugby team, and it was a great experience.
“We had an amazing game, truly. Seeing how far we came from the beginning of the season to now is incredible to look at. Simply looking at the first game we had against CRC; the improvement was there from all my teammates,” said junior Nadia Perez.
The girls really worked together as a team.
“We gave it all during this game and we worked as a team. I was able to see my teammates help each other while I saw the other team starting to ramble within their own team. Although we didn’t win with points, there was a win in effort and teamwork,” said Nadia Perez.
Coach Castanon looks forward to next year.
“Although, not the outcome we wanted. There is plenty of excitement for years to come as Morton Girls have established themselves as a top tier team,” said Coach Castanon.
Congratulations go out to the rugby team for a good end to a great season.
