Mixing Sports and Hispanic Heritage Celebrations Together
According to the Illinois Department of Commerce, Illinois celebrates the diverse Latin and Hispanic communities during Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th. The month-long celebration focuses on empowering Latin/Hispanic small businesses, uplifting the entire community. Not only that, but as stated by mariachi-plaza.com, Mariachi bands originated in Mexico in the state of Jalisco and have since spread beyond Jalisco. Hispanic Heritage Month is not only a time to motivate Latin companies, but, according to joinarcc.org, it’s also a time to look back at our history and honor our ancestors.
In a random survey of 100 Morton students, 57 students stated that they celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. However, only 6 out of the 100 students attended the Cubs’ celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month. (Of course, only 27 of the 100 were Cubs fans.)
The Cubs had a celebration for Hispanics, but some Morton students believe we should also recognize our American heritage.
“I think it’s nice that we celebrate our heritage, and I also think we have to remember we have American heritage we need to be proud of,” Morton graduate Jessie said.
While some thought of the celebration as a wonderful thing, others did not.
“They need to do a little bit more for us to come and support the teams,” Cubs fan Juan said.
While some didn’t feel motivated to support the team, others believed that everyone felt included.
“It was very inclusive. There was a mariachi band, and I’m Puerto Rican, so I don’t listen to mariachi, but I still felt included. There was a lot of celebration; they had decorations for us,” Cubs fan David said.
The Cubs’ celebration was enjoyable for those who attended, but those who didn’t celebrated differently.
“During Hispanic month, I try to participate in the many celebrations that occur throughout the month, such as parades, festivals, in-school events, etc. It always makes me happy to celebrate with my people, and it’s a month to feel proud of my culture. This month is also perfect for further educating others and me about our history,” Hispanic Teacher Leon said.
