Students note expenses, consequences of street racing

More than half of students in a random survey say they would drag race, and even more would attend a takeover — even though illegal.  (Takeovers typically involve “flash mobs” of hundreds of spectators and several many cars that arrive in a coordinated manner at specific intersections and blocking traffic to speed and show off cars and stunts like drifting and racing.)

The expensive hobby street racing Began in 1903 in Paris and has since then migrated to the cicero community, with the increased popularity of Illegal street racing we have decided to include tips if visiting or thinking of drag racing, A rough estimate on how much you would have to spend on a drag car and consequences of getting caught racing.

The majority of the Cicero community’s young adult population likes going and participating in takeovers. According to our random survey of 100 Morton East students 87 were interested in going to a takeover, and of those 52, would participate in a drag race for fun.

The average amount of money spent to on cars in the Cicero community (excluding gas, repairs and modifications) is around $28,250 dollars to start off drag racing. while some racers prefer to add modifications to there cars increasing the money they’ve spent to around $5,000 to $20,000+.

With the likely hood of many people of many people taking interest in takeovers the best way to stay safe at a takeover, due to injuries being more common at takeovers recently, is to simply “Avoid reckless driving”. exclaimed a anonymous student at Morton. And to “Always want to be alert, and aware of what’s going on around you,” replied an anonymous senior.

When asked about how to stay safe at a car meet “I usually bring a weapon or a guy I know,” said a female anonymous senior.

Some consequences of teen drag racing could be the teen caught could face misdemeanor charges which carry a maximum fine of $2500 and up to one year in jail. `

Few teens have gotten arrested for drag racing recently.  “There have not been many arrests towards teens in Cicero but there have been quite a few in Stickney,” a retired cop of Berwyn responded.
