Crossfit class will be replaced with new dancing class
April 18, 2019
Next year Morton will no longer have CrossFit class anymore and instead will be replaced with a dancing class.
CrossFit is being changed since it’s too dangerous. Allowing students to use free weights is a recipe for disaster. in 2018, 1500 people were reported in the emergency room after having an accident while at the gym. This statistic couldn’t be farther from the truth. This school year over 100 kids has been sent to the hospital, ranging from broken bones to sprained ankles. The only solution to this problem is to create a safer way for students to exercise, and that’s where dancing comes in. Dancing increases strength and stamina. In 2018 less than a quarter of people were sent to an emergency room from injuries caused by dancing in comparison to CrossFit. In a random survey of 100 students, 78% voted to replace CrossFit with dancing class and 22% wanted to keep CrossFit.
“ I think it’s a good choice to finally remove CrossFit from gym, one of my friends was hospitalized after his friend threw an 80-pound weight on his chest while he was performing a bench press, I couldn’t sleep that night because I was so worried,” Senior Juan Avila said
It’s clear that students are not responsible enough to be left free in the weight room. These students know right from wrong and clearly, in this situation, the student acted in that way because he is not responsible. It’s unfortunate this happened, but it’s certainly not the first or last time.
“I hate when the kids come from the gym and tell me they had a hard workout that day and smell so bad. My room smells horrendous and I have to use almost a full can of Febreze to get rid of the smell.” Journalism teacher Frankfother said
CrossFit is a hard class especially for some, to the point where they come to their next class drenched in sweat. Unlike other gym classes that don’t interfere with a classroom setting as CrossFit does. On top of that, it doesn’t allow kids to be focused on their work because of the feeling of being sweaty in class.
“I feel like it’s time to change the way we exercise in school. Kids often aren’t responsible when they’re given more freedom. So the addition of the dancing class will reduce the injuries and keep everyone safe.” Crossfit teacher Miguel Romero said
Many support the idea of adding dancing as a new gym class. Although people will argue that it might not be better, it’s much safer and will ultimately keep the students in the gym safe from injuries.
