Recently, immigration raids have been occurring in various communities in the United States, including in and around Cicero. Here are some ways you and your family can stay informed at this time. Remember to know YOUR rights and spread the message. If you are a legal citizen and ally, or undocumented resident, remember this.
Know Your Rights
- You have the right to remain silent and not answer any questions.
- Ask for a warrant signed by a judge.
- If you get approached by immigrant officials, you can call the support hotline at +1-855-HELP-MY-FAMILY (1-855-435-7693).
- Call an attorney for immigration assistance or seek help.
Immigrant’s Rights
- If you have a green card, ask if you can become a U.S. citizen.
- If you have a visa, ask if you can obtain a green card.
- If you have neither, ask if you can get a visa or work permit.
- If you have a criminal record or conviction, research if it can affect your case or be erased from your record.
- Remain calm; do not run.
What Documents You Should and Should Not Carry
- Carry your green card.
- Don’t carry any documentation of where you were born.
- Don’t carry any false documents.
- Always carry your red card. (red card helps people assert their rights and defend themselves with this situation)
Emergency Plan if Anything Happens with ICE (Do this BEFORE something happens.)
- Identify who will be responsible for your children.
- Update your child’s emergency contact information at school and with their doctor.
- Apply for dual nationality and a U.S. passport for your U.S. citizen child.
- Gather all important documents and store them in a safe place.
- Save money and ensure your bank account is linked to a debit card that can be used in another country.
