Out of 100 Morton East students surveyed, 70% of their homes are watching telenovelas.
According to Nielsen data, the U.S. audience for Telenovelas, like Telemundo’s Super Series™, is approaching 6 million viewers per week. According to Google, 51% of viewers are female, while 49% are male. Interestingly, the top shows people watch include La Reina del Sur, Los Ricos También Lloran, Corazón Salvaje, Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, Rubí, and Pasión de Gavilanes. According to Vox Creative, the audience for Telenovelas is considered a four-quadrant audience, meaning it includes a mix of younger and older viewers as well as both genders.
Amusingly, Telenovelas are highly entertaining, with writers adding twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. Telenovelas were created for all genders and ages, keeping those who watch distracted and deeply invested in the plot to the point that they want more. But sometimes, they go way deeper than they seem.
Mrs. Garcia, an English teacher at Morton East, explained why people are so interested in Telenovelas.
“I think so many people watch Novelas because Novelas can help distract us from our lives, providing entertainment, and many find themselves relating to the characters,” said English teacher Ms. Miranda Garcia.
Some of us don’t see it, but others are deeply impacted. Interestingly, a parent of one of the students at Morton East explained why Telenovelas are so captivating.
“Porque a veces nos dan mensajes que tenemos que captar,” said a parent of Morton East.
This question was also posed to students and teachers, including Ms. Engebretsen, a parenting teacher at Morton East.
“They are pretty entertaining and follow intense plotlines that are funny,” said parenting teacher Ms. Engebretsen.
Students like Ruth Torres, a senior at Morton East, shared their thoughts.
“Some of them have good plots, and they pique my interest,” said Ruth Torres Gaspar.
Senior Ashley Parra spoke about what’s watched at her house.
“They watch La Rosa de Guadalupe, Como Dice el Dicho, y La Familia Peluche,” said Ashley Parra.
Additionally, Rene Luna and Fernando Ceballos, two students at Morton East, explained what’s watched in their homes.
“My dad watches El Señor de los Cielos,” said senior Rene Luna.
And it’s not just women watching.
“My mom watches her Novelas on Telemundo,” said senior Fernando Ceballos.
Another parent shared their preference for a different type of drama.
“I prefer watching Turkish Novelas because they’re more interesting,” said one Morton East parent.
