Green river, what are your thoughts?
The Chicago River has been turned green before we were born. It all started in 1962 when the Chicago Journeyman Plumbers dumped 100 pounds of orange dye into the river that turned green once it hit the water. This dye was later named Kelly green. This dye had made the river green for a little over a month. Today, the Chicago Plumbers Union dyes the river with 40 pounds of Kelly green dye for St. Patrick’s Day. According to a random survey conducted, 27 people go to the river to see it being turned green, while 63 people said they see the river being turned green on a news station that is broadcasting.
“I was around five when I first saw the river being turned green. My parents would take me to the river every single St. Patrick’s Day. It was our little tradition,” Eleanor Bautista said.
Transitioning to the next person, this is a person who has been going to the river for a while.
“It started when I was 1 year old. My parents dressed me like a little green baby and took me to the river. We kept going back after that, but I stopped going when I was 18 because I had to go to college in Ohio,” postal worker Guillermo Gonzalez said.
We’ve heard from adults, but what about those who are not adults yet?
“In my class, my teacher said that the green dye goes into the lake, but I think it stays in the river!” 4th grader Daisy Serrato said.
Now, this 7-year-old saw the Chicago River being turned green for the first time.
“IT WAS SO GREEN! It looked like the boats had green tails! Hahaha,” 7-year-old Kat Guzman said excitedly.
Lastly, straying away from the river, ever wonder what activities kids do in elementary school when St. Patrick’s Day is around?
“Today (3/15/2024), we colored leprechauns and watched a movie! And I got to read a book to my class!” 7-year-old Kat Guzman said.
