Morton east campus celebrates Women’s History Month in March.
During this month, historical women are celebrated and remembered. It is celebrated to honor the achievements and contributions made by women. Throughout the years, Women’s History Month has had different themes like women in STEM, arts, or suffrage. While it is celebrated around this time, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada celebrate in October. In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, 99 reported that Women’s History Month is important.
A way that Morton East High School is celebrating Women’s History Month is by showing a slideshow on monitors throughout the days in the hallways.
“One of our History teachers, Ms. Marlo Rhode, created this PowerPoint to share on monitors in the hallway. The library also has a beautiful display outside of the Knowledge Center,” Assistant Principal, Ms. Gonzalez said.
During this month, some students think of its importance and reflect on how much women have contributed to history, such as their achievements or careers.
“It’s important because women do a lot like labor and low-paying jobs,” Senior Eileen Ortega said.
Other students share similar sentiments about the necessity of this month for remembrance. This student elaborates on why it should be celebrated and the reasons.
“I think that Women’s History Month should be celebrated because us women achieve a lot, and it’s a day to remember all the hard work we did,” Senior Nancy Mosso Hernandez said.
In Women’s History Month, there is also Women’s International Day, which reminds some of us of who we look up to or are inspired by. Many can be someone’s loved one, celebrity, or more.
“Selena Quintanilla is someone I look up to; her singing is very nice and talks about various topics like love,” Senior Monserrat Servin said.
Overall, many students here find this month important and acknowledge why it’s celebrated and remember some historical, famous women to honor them.
