Winter wins at East

Oddly, the majority of students at Morton East prefer winter to summer, survey says.

In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, more than half preferred the winter season to the summer season.

One interesting thing about winter is that snow may appear white but that’s because snow is a bunch of individual ice crystals arranged together, and when light hits snow, it bounces all around the ice crystals and the color of all the frequencies in the visible spectrum combined in equal measure is white.  Individual ice crystals are actually translucent.  Interestingly, the largest recorded snowman ever built was in Bethel Maine, in February 199; the 113-foot, 7 inch snowman broke the previous record held by Yamagata, Japan, at 96 feet and 7 inches.  And, this is what  people said about winter.

“Winter (is best) because I don’t like to get overheated,” student Jeasus Barron said.

Another student agrees.

“Winter (rocks) because of the fireplace,” student Zaria Corona said.

In summer, ancient civilizations celebrated various sun gods:  ancient Greeks would celebrate the god Cronus,  Romans paid tribute to Vesta the god of the earth, and ancient Chinese would honor femininity and the force know as yin.  Some students agree with the ancients.

“Summer (is best) because the weather is more enjoyable, warmer, and I get to go to more places,” student Alex Mireles said.

Staff agrees.

“Verano porque mi compleanos ese en verano y tambien porque no trabajo,” English teacher Ms. Janet Montalvo said.

And, some think weather is just a symptom of bad things coming our way.

“One temperature is not better for the planet; it gradually changes from one season to the next.  Climate change is making this change erratic, and it is causing the earth to have more storms, flooding, tornados, and hurricanes.  These changes are now making people leave the lands they have always lived in,”  science teacher Mr. Juan Gonzalez said.
