Students waste food
October 7, 2019
Most Morton East students are throwing out their school lunches rather than eating them.
According to the survey, 30/63 students said they throw out food. Americans waste a lot of food daily which adds up to a lot more yearly. On average 400 pounds of food is wasted per person every year. Americans can waste up to a pound of food every day. It’s a lot of money being wasted. In 2010 the United States wasted 133 billion pounds of food which translates to 161 billion dollars’ worth of food. Schools across the United States waste around 5 million dollars a day in uneaten food. That is about 1.2 billion dollars in wasted food in school lunches. All together including food lost in farms around 218 billion dollars’ worth of food is being wasted.
“The USDA says you have to take at least 3 things protein, half cup of fruit or veggies, and dairy, they do this so they can reduce waste,” Elvira Michalek said.
They use these portions to reduce waste. They also reduce waste by reheating the food and serving it to the students after school.
“Whatever food we don’t use during lunchtime is saved and reheated for after school students who want it,” Elvira Michalek said.
In our school the lunch ladies would save the food and reheated for after school and also when going to your lunch hour, they’ll have 13 variety of lunches that you could choose and eat so you wouldn’t have to eat the same thing every day.
“They offer 13 entrée’s and if people don’t like one thing, they can get another thing,” Elvira Michalek said.
Theirs 13 types of food that the school would give you, but you have the option to not put things on your tray that you’re not going to eat, or you don’t like.
“Don’t put things on your tray you don’t want” Elvira Michalek said.
Pick a food that you would think of eating and don’t choose anything that would make it look like prison food.
“It’s jail food,” Morton student said.
If you think the food isn’t good, then don’t bother grabbing it.
“If you know you are not going to eat the food you shouldn’t grab it,” Elvira Michalek said.
If you aren’t going to eat all the food you grab then don’t grab it especially vegetables, milk, and regular food since most of the time these types of food are thrown out or only half-eaten.
“The most common food I see thrown out is vegetables, milk, and even half-eaten regular food,” Louis the security guard said.

Students should stop complaining about the food here. At least food is offered and is often times filling. They should bring their own food to eat if they really don’t like it. Wasting food is a serious problem all over the world, and it is sad that the students in this school don’t take it seriously.
Evelyn Galeana • Dec 12, 2019 at 12:48 pm
Students need to stop complaining so much. They’d eat it if they weren’t around others. If they don’t like the food, they should just bring their own. Wasting food is a huge problem around the world, and some people don’t understand because they’ve never been in that position before. They should try understanding.

I liked the fact that you guys followed the LQTQ format but I would say you guys could use more indirect quotes.
Yasmine Corro • Oct 10, 2019 at 11:03 pm
This article has a good lead witch it’s something good to start of with. In my opinion this articles does include the LQTQ style. I really liked the article but one thing you guys should work more on is the headline.
Jessica Contreras • Oct 10, 2019 at 5:53 pm
I believe that you shouldn’t be wasting the school food. I get it that sometimes it isn’t always the greatest thing to eat, but if you’re aware of the things the school gives out on the days of the week, maybe consider bringing something you’ll eat, rather than wasting the school’s food. Or just don’t eat. Don’t waste the school’s money on the food they can give us. We can’t be too picky either, it’s a school, not a five star restaurant.

Very straightforward, simplicity is always good. The article needed more quotes but overall very good work stating an issue that’s been happening for years.
Tristann Sanchez • Oct 10, 2019 at 3:57 pm
The article is well done with the utilization of proper LQTQ style; however i will say that an aspect that has to be critiqued is the utilization of quotes in the article with ‘(quote)” individual said, it should be utilized as individual says “(quote.)”

i really liked the evidence you used it really helped the information you were telling about. one think you might wanna fix is your punctuation.
Alan Casimiro Perez • Oct 10, 2019 at 1:39 pm
Lead is too short. Needs When, why, and how. Be Careful and makes sure to not any of your own opinions and biases in your article.
You also need more transitions to help flow from 1 sections to the next. Despite being divided into several paragraphs it feels like 1 whole paragraph.

I found out that on average 400 pounds of food is wasted per person every year. Americans can waste up to a pound of food every day. What needed improving was the wording in some places made it difficult to understand.
Lizbeth Guzman • Oct 10, 2019 at 9:11 am
I like the way you guys used you evidence. Your lead was short and simple and it kept the reader interested. However, i think you guys couldve added more quotes. Overall, good article.

The article is interesting but theres a couple mistakes with the grammar issues and you supposed to say ”Five million” not 5 million and i agree that morton east cafeteria needs to give out better food.
Yuleni A • Oct 9, 2019 at 1:42 pm
Good topic, but your number that are less than 10 should be spelled out, like “five million”.
Alexis G. • Oct 9, 2019 at 11:36 am
I believe that if you don’t want to eat school food than don’t get it than bring your own lunch. if students take lunch and just throw it away it sucks because 1 they school pays money to feed the students and 2 kids around the world don’t have that much food.
Jose Diaz • Oct 9, 2019 at 10:46 am
they kinda followed the LQTQ but over all this article need better grammar and better use of commas, i also think the tittle is to weak and it should have more of a professional title
Nancy Curiel • Oct 9, 2019 at 10:36 am
There was some grammar problmes. Overall there was good facts involved.
Deisy Ramos • Oct 9, 2019 at 9:45 am
I like this article. I can see their perspective. I like how their point is backed up with evidence. It is disgusting to see how many food we are wasting.
Oliver Arias • Oct 9, 2019 at 9:33 am
They followed the LQTQ format perfectly, but they need to work on their spelling grammar and use more indirect quotes. Nice job!
Yvette Conejo • Oct 9, 2019 at 9:20 am
They article could’ve been better. Doesn’t really state Facts
linda ho • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:19 pm
Overall, the article provides a lot of good statics but theres too much opinon.

I think food waste is something the world is struggling with everyday and some people don’t even try to reduce it. Therefore, I think students should just take what they know they’re going to eat and leave behind what they won’t eat. The people who take lunch and don’t eat it should think about how much food is being wasted all around the world, the hard work people put into transferring that food onto their plates, and how many people are starving all around the world who wish for even the smallest portion of food.
Andrea • Oct 8, 2019 at 7:50 pm
BE GRATEFUL!! Not only does the school provide you with OPTIONS to choose from but extra little snacks to buy. Students should really think before even lining up to get food. You may not want anything on the menu, so DON’T GRAB IT. Supper simple. Although I do think that we could vary the menu every week. Its its very much appreciated get a meal that could keep you going for the rest of your day, to the school, the district and the government. There could be some changes that could be done to the menu. Although I believe that students should just not line up if they don;t like the food, or bring their own lunch. Also, the article does include very accurate information. Good job.
Fernanda Hernandez • Oct 8, 2019 at 7:18 pm
i still eat it. it gets you through the day.. Sometimes even better than my moms cooking
Jorge • Oct 8, 2019 at 2:14 pm
The school food is bogus. I think there should be more fresh food.
Leslie Barajas • Oct 8, 2019 at 2:13 pm
I think students should just get what they’re going to eat. There’s a lot of people out there that wish to eat a little piece of bread, but then there’s others that don’t care and throw it out. People should be more careful on what they be throwing out and think about the homeless.
Katya • Oct 8, 2019 at 12:24 pm
Students defiantly need to stop grabbing the food they won’t eat.
Paloma Martinez • Oct 8, 2019 at 11:10 am
I think students should only grab what they are actually gonna eat, if they are not gonna eat then why grab it at all? There’s some students that can’t afford their lunch or breakfast. If the students don’t like the food from the school then why don’t they bring their own lunch and stop complaining.
brian gutierrez • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:58 am
i feel like we should all just stop being wussies and just eat the food. there’s nothing inherently bad about it. I’m sure morton’s food is sometimes better than your mother’s cooking.
Diego Sazo • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:21 am
I liked the facts given about how much food is wasted daily and annually, it really made me think about how much we ignore the waste that we produce. I also liked the quotes given from students and staff on their own opinions on this issue. Personally I believe that food waste in the U.S. and in this school is a big problem. I think that students should only take the food they will eat, and that the menu should be changed so that the food offered will be eaten more.
Liliana Gonzalez • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:19 am
I agree with everything in this article, especially the part where students throw away the fruits, vegetables and milk. When I go to throw my trash away there are unopened milks in the trash and perfectly fine fruits as well. In stead of throwing them away students should save the fruits for later. I liked this article overall but what can the students do with milk they thought they would drink but didn’t have time to? Should there be a basket where people put unopened milk back to be reused? – Liliana Gonzalez
Jaqueline Leanos • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:11 am
In this article, some sentences are missing comas, especially the first paragraph. Also, I think that the school should let students pick their food that will actually eat and not waste. If there is extra food at the end of the day, I think that it should be donated to people that really need food.
Jazmin Arana • Oct 8, 2019 at 10:07 am
I agree that a lot of students including me, throw away a lot of food and that is not good. I always throw away my vegetables like most students do and we should stop doing that because that is just money being wasted. I think that the school should not require us to take the vegetables because we just throw it away .
Alexandra Campos • Oct 8, 2019 at 9:27 am
I really liked how they focused on how much food is getting wasted at this school. I also liked that they gave numbers of how mush food gets wasted at the school and around the world.
Oscar Boleres • Oct 8, 2019 at 9:27 am
I believe that people should not get food that they are not going to eat, but I also believe that students should not be forced to grab fruits or vegetables because the students are probably not going to eat them, which leads to more waste. I feel that students should be able to grab whatever they want and not be forced to grab food that will go to waste.
Giselle • Oct 8, 2019 at 9:11 am
I think that students should only grab what they would actually eat if they won’t eat what they grab then don’t grab it at all. There are students among them that can’t afford to buy themselves lunch or breakfast. If the food is not to those people that throw away their food then don’t even grab and we should have them bring their own food that they would actually like.
Samanta Tirado • Oct 7, 2019 at 2:28 pm
In my opinion students should only get what they are going to eat because many others would like it instead and the extra or left over food can be given to those who will eat it and not throw it away.
John Cena • Oct 7, 2019 at 2:27 pm
Students waste food by existing. If we get rid of them than no wasted food.
Brianna Munoz • Oct 7, 2019 at 1:56 pm
If school waste so much food they should start changing the menu to food that kids do like and are willing to eat. Students should also be mindful of what they grab. If you know you don’t like the school food don’t grab it.
J • Oct 7, 2019 at 1:55 pm
Students wasting food triggers me because if you’re not gong to eat food why get it in the first place? Making the school waste money, untouched food going to the garbage. JUST DONT GET FOOD IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO EAT IT.
Aileen • Oct 7, 2019 at 1:36 pm
I think students, shouldn’t get the food if they aren’t going to eat it , it ends up going to waste.
Karina Lopez Rodriguez • Oct 7, 2019 at 1:31 pm
I think students that throw away their food shouldn’t even grab the food they won’t eat. There are students among them that can’t afford to buy themselves lunch or breakfast. If the food is not to those people that throw away their food then don’t even grab and we should have them bring their own food that they would actually like.

We need some Tacos del Atotonilco.
Karina Lopez Rodriguez • Oct 7, 2019 at 1:27 pm
I think that students should only grab what they would actually eat if they won’t eat what they grab then don’t grab it at all! There are students in the school that can’t afford lunch or breakfast. Or if the food is not to the liking of those people that throw it away, then have them bring their own lunch instead.
Fernanda Sanchez Duran • Oct 7, 2019 at 12:39 pm
i think if people complain so much for lunch they should really just bring there own lunch, or atleast a snack. Sometimes people want more food so i think they should ask someone who isnt gonna eat there lunch if they could have it, that probably will decrease the amount of lunch being wasted.
angel gonzalez • Oct 7, 2019 at 10:49 am
students should just get the food that their gonna eat and if the school is left with extra food than they should feed the homeless with it
Jose Andrade • Oct 7, 2019 at 9:14 am
give better food then, the school gives bad food always pizza and burgers i want more Mexican food they tried to give tacos once but its horrible the tortilla cold.I WANT BETTER FOOD.
