Remote good for some, bad for others

During this pandemic students and teachers were introduced to remote learning; for some students, remote learning is going well, for others it’s not.

According to the article, ‘Understood’ paying attention during class time is hard for kids as they get older because we believe we can multitask we ended up getting distracted. Other things can affect how long kids can focus, too. For example, where are the students taking their classes? If the room area is crowded or simply has too many distractions that can be an issue for kids to stay on task. Kids can walk away from the computer if they just cannot handle being on the screen for so long, aside with that are they having too much stress? Being able to learn also depends on how the student is able to learn. Some are visual learners; others are hands-on learners and so on. Teens can be very interested in a subject, but no matter how interested they are if their head is not in, the right peace of mind they will not pay attention to their classes.  In a random poll, the majority of Morton East students are slacking off this year. They were asked  ‘Are students staying on task during remote learning or walking away from their devices?’ 68% of Morton East students report that they walk away during remote learning, while 32% report that they stay on task.

“Online learning is new to all students across Illinois and nationwide. It is important to recognize that this is not how traditional teaching and learning is supposed to take place. Since the pandemic is still very prevalent in our lives, it is important to be safe, while also providing Morton students the best education possible. We will continue to support students throughout remote learning in any way possible, ” Dean of students Mr.Depa said.

Students aren’t the only ones who get impacted by remote learning, all their surroundings do too. In this case, their families get dragged into this too.

“There have been reports of this, and we are actively reaching out to parents to help figure out which supports students may need in order to be successful. We have virtual meetings, student conferences, and extensive phone calls to ensure success for our students,” Dean of students Mr.Depa said.

Although, online learning is something new for everyone there were thoughts and opinions about it before it was even an official thing there were already concerns. Some already had a feeling online learning was not going to have a positive effect.

Remote learning was definitely going to be a roller coaster. Many students need a lot of help to be successful.

” I think kids don’t stay on task during online learning because you can easily get distracted with your phone or your family. Now you’re focusing on that and not paying attention in class,” Senior student Irene Carrera said.

Although many of us as students want to be successful it is quite a challenge to keep going.

“No, kids don’t stay on task. I remember I used to be a good student. Now I get distracted more since now we get to be at home where we get to layback and do what we couldn’t in class,” Senior student Yarily  Alfaro said.

Remote learning became the new way to educate ourselves but even though we are all trying this is something hard to get used to.
