Students still planning to gather with family over holidays

A lot of students and adults still plan to party with family during the holidays.

According to the CDC, holidays during COVID-19 would be high risk for friends and family. Originally, holidays are held in large gatherings but due to covid-19 people are reconsidering hosting and attending a large group of people. Over-time, people should reconsider going to these events/ gatherings because it’s risky. However, if you are attending a gathering everyone should get tested at least a week before so that everyone is safe. In a random survey of 10 students and 10 adults, 8 of the students and 4 adults would be attending a family gathering this year.

“I personally am not going to partake in family gatherings over the holidays this year unless the weather cooperates, and we are able to do so safely outside.  I think it is best to follow the guidelines provided by local health officials to remain safe during the outbreak.  Although not the same, video calls can be utilized to meet with family over the holidays,” Gym teacher Mr. Scaletta said.

Others plan to slow down and enjoy the simpler things in an intimate setting this season.

“I think the holidays are going to suck with COVID, but it will give us an opportunity to reflect on all that we have and appreciate the little things in life.  Often during the holidays, we are rushing around trying to get from one event to another.  This year we will be able to slow down, relax, and enjoy our family and kids.  Sadly, I do not think gathering with our families will be something we are doing this year.  Although it sucks, and Zoom meetings will never have the same feeling and effect, I would rather suffer one year without seeing all my family than have one of them die from COVID and never be able to see them again.  At least we are in the world of technology and we have options,” Culinary teacher Mrs. Herrera said.

If you’re going to get together with family, just be sure to keep it safe.

“I think it’s going to be difficult and things aren’t going to be the same as before because we’ve lost a lot of people during this pandemic. This time we won’t be able to enjoy them as much. During the holidays I do not think many people will gather like before because they don’t feel safe having that many people near. I do not think a family gathering is necessary during the holidays because a lot of people don’t want to put their families at risk. I think if you are getting together you should wear a mask and get tested just to be sure,” College student Jacqueline Leon said.
