Teacher uncertainty is worst part of online teaching
February 1, 2021
Teachers not knowing if students are really learning seems to be the worst of teaching online.
According to Daily the Aztec “Opinion: Online classes are not effective in educating students” by Catherine Van Weele, there is a lack of willingness and desire to learn. Students are simply not motivated in online classes. They are typically easy A’s and are time efficient, but student learning outcomes tend to be lackluster. Students simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade, rather than genuinely engaging with the course material. Currently, many teachers and even students think this way, many teachers believe that most students are not really learning while doing remote learning. In a random survey of teachers and students 20 out 29 believe that the worst of teaching online is that teachers do not know if students are really learning the lessons they are teaching.
“It is hard to make my students work out and not be there to motivate, guide and correct their posture and technique. I know that I can do that in person but it’s almost impossible online. I miss the relationships that I build with my students. Working out is about getting physically fit, building self confidence and engaging socially. I miss all of it. I believe that some students that are truly motivated are learning but other are disinterested. For example, a good teacher can change an unmotivated students attitude towards a subject/topic/school in person butt I think online school makes that difficult for them,” PE teacher Mr. Romero said.
In the past, PE teachers have different physical activities for the students and now being online, it’s a little difficult to do those types of activities and for students to participate and turning in their work.
“The hardest part of teaching online is getting students to participate and turn work in. (This only applies to some students.) Being around people. I feel that students are learning if they put in the effort and try. For example, students who participate in class and reach out to their teachers are learning,” marketing teacher Ms. Stefano said.
Currently, if students put their part during class it possible for them to learn but if they do not comment, ask questions or answer them when the teachers ask questions the students are never going to learn.
“The worst teachers go through alone is students not communicating with them and seeing how effortless students are through remote learning. Teachers are doing their best and students are loosing motivation, often teachers think it’s their fault but in reality it’s the students. Also during remote learning I also feel like it’s the hardest part for them when they want to have a class conversation and get totally ignored by their students. Honestly, no students aren’t learning through remote learning. There is a lack of motivation and trying to work on their mental health. Students get easily distracted by the smallest thing and do not pay attention. It’s harder to get up in the morning and stayed focused 8hrs a day on the screen,” senior Lupita Rubio said.
Usually, students get distracted during class and when doing homework. It is hard for students to stay on the screen during class and after class but at the same time, it is the same as if they were in school. Teachers do not know if kids leave their computers on and just leave to go do something else or go to sleep.
“Less participation from the kids than before. They don’t know if people are actually behind the screen. I think it’s the same. That they don’t know if there is people on the other side of the screen or if they’re sleeping. If they are explaining the topic well enough. I think they are. But I also think that being at school would be better,” senior Yesenia Hernandez said.

Belmares, I believe this article to be very well written it shows many issues we are currently having, and how teachers feel which sounds very sad and I can relate to, I as well miss the relationship between a teacher and student and how easy it is to talk to them in person well not easy but the bond that can be built up from such. I was so excited for sophomore year mostly knowing the teachers I had and that my brother had them in previous years which gave me joy, and still I do get to meet them but it is certainly not the same, it is not the same a screen and a classroom, a voice and face and being there in person. I agree it is so difficult to motivate through a screen and so easy to lose focus and lose motivation and wanting to truly learn and understand, mostly with all that has happened, many people were affected in very deep and sorrowful ways, and students are losing motivation but too I believe there are still a lot whom are trying to comeback and try again to understand or that keep on being good students and doing what they are asked to do and actually learning, yes this most definitely would be better in person but online at least for me in some occasions has been better since I used to always get so nervous in school for very small things and still at times I get nervous it is much less nerves, but hopefully in well amount of time this all can start to clear up slowly and well.

As the article mentions as a student it can be very exhausting to wake up every day to stare at your computer screen and try to make sense of the class you are in while simultaneously trying not to distract yourself by using your phone or watching tv which can be very tempting.

[BELMARES] I totally agree. I went hybrid because I couldn’t focus at all when I was at home. A very noisy family equals distractions, so I tried to go to school to see if it helped. It did! Also because I wanted to be with my teachers so they didn’t feel like they were talking to themselves all day.

BELMARES: In my opinion, staying engaged in school during remote learning was not that hard. In my opinion, its easier to stay engaged. More specifically, there is no distractions in remote learning for me. I get to sit there and focus without worrying about all the high school drama. Therefore, I have more time to do my schoolwork and more time to multi-task on my assignments. Therefore, in my opinion this article is true for most students but not for me.

(Ms. Belmares) I think that online learning isn’t effective and it doesn’t provide students and teacher the bond that they could have had if they were in person. The pandemic took us all by surprised and online learning was the only alternative but I do really feel like this will set back many students education in the future.

BELMARES- I agree with this article and also believe how challenging it can be to do remote learning. I do believe it would be better in school, and I genuinely agree with a lot of what this article had to say. Remote learning is especially hard for certain students, even though it may not be for all.

I think this article is really good, and I like how it has statistics and opinions from the people in the school. I also agree with the article, I think it would be better if we were in school.

Daly-being remote is hard for students like the article said loss of motivation and students not finding the class interesting. teacher’s not knowing what the students are doing during class if they are paying attention or if they are working in class. each student is going through something different and not having a place where students cant concentrate might be a reason why they feel unmotivated.

BELMARES- I understand that students have become lazy and unmotivated because of such a different learning environment then before, but I believe that online learning can also have positives. I am sure that for many students this new way of learning can be challenging but it can also really help students understand how to adapt to their circumstances, something that wasn’t really taught in school before the pandemic. I have also found myself having more time to myself than before which really helps with mental health, but am also sure there are others who have gone through the opposite. Overall I think that we just have to push through a little bit longer in hopes of creating the educational atmosphere school use to have, it can certainly help if we gave it our all and recognized that WE ARE ALL trying our best during these times.

BELMARES- I think that most students like myself you didn’t have a problem with staying engaged and trying their best in normal school also do the same in virtual school but those who needed more help to stay motivated and try their best probably ended up just not trying at all because it was harder for teacher to motivate them online.

BELMARES – I agree in a sense. Yeah it is hard, and difficult but we have to consider what is going on in the world. A pandemic. We cannot just resume to school and our daily work like nothing. Therefore, that is where E-Learning comes in. It is the best we can do for a now, and that is okay. Obviously most students won’t be motivated. I mean, who is after staring at a computer most of the day? Think about it, we stare at the computer all day during classes, then after school to do work. It is tiring, and I can see what people are so unmotivated about it. I can also see how it affects the teachers, and how they are uncertain about their lessons. But, I hope they keep pushing to stay motivated and engaging with students.
