Sleeplessness caused by increased screentime

It’s all that screen time that’s ruining students’ sleep patterns, students say.

According to Land of Sleep, originally, being exposed to a short length of light by any device that is also known as the blue light, can play mind games with your brain to stay awake. As being exposed to the blue light emitted from devices it represses melatonin that causes to staying asleep instead of falling asleep. Recently, people have started to notice they been having problems falling asleep due to being on social media, receiving notifications, and watching videos.  Basically, students’ brains are still engaged; they grab their phones instead of falling asleep.  In a random survey of 68 Morton East students, 62 students reported that screen time does affect their sleep, while 6 students reported that screen time does not affect their sleep.

“Whenever I’m determined to go to sleep I can’t because I’m constantly wanting to use my phone for example to be on Facebook, looking at memes, TikTok, or Netflix,” senior Michelle Chavez said.

Although many people can agree with this response it’s mostly common depending on your age category and the things you do on a daily basis which can make you wanting to go sleep or causing problems to have some rest.

“By regular daily amount no, it makes me sleepier, and I end up sleeping more,” former student Giovanni Jimenez said.

Over time as being on any platform that has a screen can be addicting and many more reasons that make users be on it throughout the whole day for hours.

“I be watching that TikTok thingy bruh I do not go to sleep until 2 am. I be trying to sleep but no matter what I am there on my phone watching videos,” a former graduate Alexis Chavez said.

Eventually, not sleeping can cause health problems as many people do not experience it until their older age, on the other hand, people experience it at an early age that can affect them in a mental and physical way.

“It has been affecting my sleep:  the first reason is I have a bad sleep deprivation, and the second reason is being on my phone too much which will eventually cause me to have sleep deprivation,” senior Melissa Barajas said.
