On November 13, 2018, the second IML contest took place at Morton East High School in room 302 right after school. IML stands for Illinois Mathematics League, it’s a math contest were any student can participate. There are 6 IML Math Contest throughout the year (basically one each month) in which many schools compete against each other. The winning school will get a plaque and the top scoring students will receive certificates of achievement. Mr. Horvath is in charge of this he teaches integrated math 3 and pre-calculus. The students are given a set of problems and are asked to solve them during a period of time, in this case, they had 30 minutes. The students aren’t allowed to talk, use their cell phones or headphones during this time, but they are allowed to use a calculator. In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, 81 reported that they did know what the IML contest is.

“The IML contest been going on for decades already, I remember being in high school and being for of it,” Mrs. Kane, a math teacher, said.

This shows how this math contest has been successful throughout the years because it has been able to keep on running and more students are joining.

“I started going to this contests since last year, I decided to participate in this not only for fun but because it can help me improve in my math,” senior Chrismar Calbillo said.

The IML contest can be a great opportunity for students who enjoy math to be part of and for students to practice their math skills. On the other hand, not everyone has the same interest in math.

“I really don’t know what the IML contest is and I wouldn’t join because I am not that good at math and math is not one of my favorite subjects,” one anonymous student said.
