“Blinding Lights” wins Best Song of 2020

“Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd was the best most popular song of last year for Morton East students.

In a random survey of 56 Morton East students/Cicero residents, 34% said “Blinding lights”.

According to Songfacts , formerly on November 29, 2019 the song was released. Prior to this, the Weeknd is speaking of a lady in this song. Until now it states that it was addressing the song to his on-off-on girlfriend, Bella Hadid, therefore he uses “will never let her go this time,” to express his feelings towards her. Interestingly, the song was originally teased in a trailer on German TV for a Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV advert.

Blinding Lights” “was the song I chose because of the rhythm and its catchiness. The first time I played it, it was after I played basketball,” senior Alex Orozco said.

“WAP” by Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion came in second place with 32% of votes. This song hit the Billboard Hot 100 songs. This became Cardi B’s fourth number one on the ranking and Megan’s second.

“The song “WAP” was the one I chose because Cardi B is my favorite artist, I found the song funny and loved it even more because of the TikTok dances made with it,” junior Giselle Trujillo said.

“34+35” by Ariana Grande came in third place with 11% of votes. This song is Ariana Grande’s fifth number 1 album on the Billboard 200.

“I listened to a lot of music in 2020, according to my Spotify, 38, 820 minutes (about 13 and a half hours) of music. I have heard of all the songs mentioned in the poll, but I liked Ari’s the best. I really like the whole album because besides “34+35”, there are also other great songs. Ari was not in my top artists this year, but I for sure listened to her a lot more once her new album came out. There were great Tik Tok dances that went with a lot of her songs, so I liked that too,” English Student Teacher Noelle Lowther said.

“Toosie Slide” by Drake received the fewest votes.

“Toosie Slide” “was not one of my favorite songs of 2020. It was a good song for a while because of the dance from TikTok but other than that, it was okay. Drake has done great songs throughout his singing career, but this song was not one of them. The only reason I heard the song because it was a Tiktok dance trend,” senior Alexa Rocel said.
